I consider myself to be primarily a 3D artist, but in my 13 years working in the game-dev industry I've done a little of everything - animation, rigging, VFX, design, character art and environment art.
I've worked at various studios both in Australia and internationally, as well as doing some freelance and outsourcing work for all aspects of game-art production.

Most of my 3D work is aiming for realism. Stylised work has it's place, of course, but realism is where the real challenge is - This is because there is a 'right' and a 'wrong' way for realistic models to look. People know what it's supposed to look like and that's what they expect to see.
If people can't tell which image is my model and which is my reference, I've done my job.

These days there are fewer and fewer technical contraints placed upon us as game artists, and the job is increasingly artistic, rather than technical. This gives us the oopportunity to be artisans, rather than just modellers. Every piece we produce has a history and a character all of it's own, and that should show in the final product. There is no such thing as a 'generic' asset.
